A Message from the Chancellor

UNL community,

In light of the large number of demonstrations occurring at universities across the country, I want to remind our campus community of our longstanding and steadfast commitment to free speech and the vibrant exchange of ideas. This commitment is thoughtfully articulated in university policy, which I hope you will take time to review.

As chancellor, I take very seriously both our institutional commitment to protect and promote free expression, and our obligation to ensure the health, safety, and welfare of our campus community. Finding the right balance between the two requires me and other campus leaders to make hard decisions about how best to ensure continuity of university operations and guard against intimidation, harassment, or discriminatory conduct while not stifling the free expression of ideas and opinions.

Today, an event is being held on our campus in the public forum space near Broyhill Fountain outside the Nebraska Union. The leaders of the event have met with campus administrators and have been informed that the event should not jeopardize public safety, disrupt our academic activities and campus operations, or result in the destruction of property. Further, they have been informed that the university will not allow the use of tents or establishment of an encampment.

It has been my determination, and that of other university leaders, that this is the kind of “careful, deliberate and nuanced balance of interests” called for by our university policy. Undoubtedly, not everyone will agree with this assessment. However, my commitment to you is that both today, and in the days and weeks to come, we will work diligently to protect the freedom of expression, which we hold so dear, while ensuring that we continue to advance our mission of teaching, research, and service. Doing so is central to our identity and vital to our future.
